How to Fix a Leaking Vape in South Africa: Causes & Solutions
Few things are more annoying than pulling your vape out of your pocket to find e-liquid on your fingers, or getting a mouthful of juice mid-puff. The good news: a leaking vape is almost always caused by something simple, and it is usually fixable in a couple of minutes. This guide walks South African vapers through why pods and tanks leak, how to stop it, and when a leak is really telling you to replace a part.
Nicotine products are for adult smokers and vapers aged 18+ only.
About vape leaks: why they happen
A pod or tank holds e-liquid under gentle pressure, wicked into the coil ready to vaporise. A leak means liquid is escaping where it shouldn’t — past the coil, out of the airflow, or around a seal. The usual causes are:
- Overfilling. Filling right to the brim leaves no air gap, so liquid is forced out of the airflow holes.
- A flooded or worn coil. Too much liquid pooling around the coil, or an old coil that no longer wicks properly, leads to leaking and gurgling.
- A loose or cross-threaded pod/tank. If the pod isn’t seated fully or a tank section is not tightened straight, liquid escapes.
- Damaged or misaligned seals (O-rings). A pinched or perished rubber seal breaks the airtight fit.
- Pressure and temperature changes. Big altitude or temperature swings, or leaving a device in a hot car, expand the air inside and push liquid out.
- Draw style mismatch. Drawing hard and fast on an MTL pod can pull liquid through the coil.
Solutions and spares at ADVapes
Most leaks are cured by good technique and, when needed, a fresh pod or coil. If a pod’s seals are worn or its coil is spent, the fix is simply a replacement. ADVapes keeps replacement pods and coils in stock, including:

How to stop your vape leaking: step by step
- Don’t overfill. Leave a small air gap at the top and avoid getting liquid down the central airflow tube when filling.
- Prime and seat the pod correctly. Let a new coil soak for 5–10 minutes, then push the pod in fully until it clicks or seats flush.
- Check the seals. Remove the pod and inspect the rubber O-rings and the pod’s contact points. If a seal is torn, pinched or missing, replace the pod.
- Draw gently and steadily. On MTL pods, a slow, smooth pull prevents pulling liquid through the coil. Avoid short, sharp, hard drags.
- Store it upright. Keep the device standing up, mouthpiece uppermost, and out of hot cars and direct sun.
- Clear a flooded coil. If it gurgles, remove the pod and blow gently through it onto a tissue (from the mouthpiece side) to clear pooled liquid, then reseat.
- Replace a tired pod or coil. If it still leaks after all of the above, the coil or seals are worn — fit a fresh pod or coil.
FAQ
Why does my new pod leak straight away?
Usually overfilling, liquid getting into the central airflow during filling, or the pod not being seated fully. Refill carefully leaving an air gap, wipe any excess, and push the pod home. If it persists, check the seals.
Is a leaking pod dangerous?
The main risks are e-liquid contacting the battery contacts and skin exposure to nicotine liquid. Wipe up leaks promptly, keep the battery contacts clean and dry, and wash your hands after handling e-liquid. If liquid has pooled around the battery area, dry it fully before use.
Leaking and a burnt taste at the same time — what’s wrong?
That combination usually points to a worn or flooded coil that is no longer wicking evenly. Replacing the pod or coil typically fixes both. Our guide on why your vape tastes burnt covers this.
