Disposable Vapes in South Africa: Puff Counts, Types & How to Choose
Disposable vapes are the easiest way to start vaping — no setup, no refilling, no buttons. But the category has grown fast, and “disposable” now covers everything from pocket-sized 3,000-puff bars to 55,000-puff rechargeable giants. This guide explains the types, what the puff numbers actually mean, how to match a device to your habit, and what disposable vapes really cost once you do the maths. The three kinds of “disposable”
Almost every device on the shelf falls into one of three groups, and knowing which is which is the single most useful thing you can learn about the category.
- One-use disposables: the whole device is sealed — vape it until it’s empty, then recycle it. Simplest possible option, and the cheapest way to try a flavour. The Nasty Bar DX3k and the Elf Bar Ice King 25K both sit here, at opposite ends of the size range.
- Pod disposables (prefilled pod systems): a reusable battery with prefilled, click-on pods. You keep the battery and just swap pods — cheaper and far less wasteful over time. The Nasty PX10, Bewolk Bar and Elf Bar EW9000 all work this way.
- DTL / hookah-style disposables: a smaller sub-category built for big, airy clouds rather than a tight cigarette-like draw. These usually run a lower nicotine strength because you inhale much more vapour per puff.
Most South African vapers want the first two. If you’re coming off cigarettes, start there.
What do puff counts actually mean?
Puff counts (3K, 5K, 9K, 25K, 55K…) are an estimate of how many draws you’ll get before the e-liquid or battery runs out. They’re genuinely useful for comparing value between devices, but they are not a guarantee. A long, hard draw pulls far more liquid than a short one, so two people can get wildly different mileage out of the same device.
Treat the number as a rough capacity rating, not a promise. What it’s really good for is working out cost per puff — and that’s where the differences get interesting.
Rechargeable but still disposable?
Yes — and it isn’t a contradiction. Bigger devices hold more e-liquid than a single battery charge can vaporise, so a USB-C port is added purely so you can finish the juice you paid for. You still throw the device away at the end; you just don’t waste half of it.
Match the puff count to your habit
This is where most people get it wrong — they buy the biggest number on the shelf and then find the device goes stale before they finish it. Use this as a starting point:
- ~3,000 puffs: occasional, social or trial use. Perfect for testing a flavour before committing. Cheapest entry point.
- 5,000–10,000 puffs: the sweet spot for a light-to-moderate daily vaper. Typically a week or two of use.
- 15,000–25,000 puffs: a regular all-day vaper. Better cost per puff, and usually rechargeable.
- 30,000–55,000 puffs: heavy users who want the lowest possible cost per puff and don’t want to re-buy every week.
A device that’s too big for your habit isn’t a bargain — it’s a device you’ll get bored of before it’s finished.
Nicotine strength and draw type
Nearly all disposables in South Africa run on nicotine salt, most commonly at 50mg (5%). Nic salt is what makes a high strength feel smooth instead of harsh, which is exactly what an ex-smoker needs. If 50mg feels too strong, look for lower-strength options — or move to a refillable kit where you choose the strength yourself.
MTL (mouth-to-lung) is the tight, cigarette-like draw you’ll find on the overwhelming majority of disposables. DTL (direct-to-lung) is a loose, airy draw that produces big clouds; it’s a different experience and normally comes at a lower nicotine strength. If you’re switching from cigarettes, you want MTL.
Popular disposables and pod systems at ADVapes
Nasty Bar DX3k — Watermelon Ice
R179
A compact ~3,000-puff one-use bar. The cheapest, lowest-commitment way to find out which flavours you actually like.
Nasty PX10 Pod — Cherry Peach Lemon
R99
A pod-disposable: ~5,000 puffs per pod, clicking onto a reusable PX10 battery. Cheap to keep going and far less waste.
Elf Bar Ice King 25K — Strawberry Berries
R369
One-use, up to 25,000 puffs, with adjustable ice and Type-C charging. The all-day workhorse of the range.
Nasty Surge 55K — Mango Ice
R379
Up to ~55,000 puffs — one of the highest counts available anywhere, and the lowest cost per puff of any one-use device.
Running a pod-disposable system? You’ll also want a spare base — the Bewolk Bar Battery Kit (R169) is the reusable battery for Bewolk’s 6000 pods, and it’s a buy-once purchase.
One-use or pod system — which is actually cheaper?
Do the arithmetic on cost per 1,000 puffs and the picture gets clear fast. A R179 / 3,000-puff bar works out at roughly R60 per 1,000 puffs. A R369 / 25,000-puff device is closer to R15. A R379 / 55,000-puff device lands under R7. On paper, bigger always wins.
But a pod-disposable changes the equation again. Buy a battery once (around R169), then replace only the pod — about R99 for ~5,000 puffs, or roughly R20 per 1,000 puffs with no new battery, no new charger and no new device in the bin each time. If you vape every day, that consistency usually beats re-buying whole one-use devices, and it’s a far gentler landing than jumping straight to a refillable.
Want to go cheaper still? Step up to a refillable pod system with bottled nic salts and you’re paying a few Rand per ml instead of buying a new device at all. That’s the cheapest per-puff option on the market by a wide margin — it just asks a little more of you up front.
Flavours: what actually sells
Icy fruit blends dominate South African disposables — strawberry, mango, watermelon and berry profiles with a menthol finish are consistently the best sellers. Beyond that you’ll find dessert, energy-drink, cola and tobacco profiles across the range. If you’re new, start with an icy fruit: it’s the most forgiving profile and the least likely to taste odd as the device ages.
Common questions
Are higher puff counts better value?
On cost per puff, yes — but only if you actually finish the device. Match the count to your real usage rather than buying the biggest number on the shelf.
Do I need to charge a disposable?
Larger devices are rechargeable via USB-C so you can use every drop of e-liquid. Small bars like the DX3k are designed to last their rated puffs without charging at all.
Which disposable should a first-timer buy?
A small ~3,000-puff bar in a popular icy-fruit flavour. It’s cheap, it’s low-commitment, and it tells you what you like before you spend real money.
Why does my device taste burnt near the end?
The wick is drying out — the liquid is basically finished. That’s your cue to stop; pushing on just burns the coil.
Please recycle
Every disposable contains a lithium battery, so don’t bin them with general waste. Drop spent devices at a battery-recycling point. This is one of the strongest arguments for pod-disposables and refillable pod kits: far fewer batteries thrown away, and a noticeably smaller pile of dead plastic at the end of the year.
