Pod Systems vs Disposables: Why a Refillable Vape Kit Saves You Money
A pod system is the sweet spot of vaping: small and simple like a disposable, but refillable, rechargeable and dramatically cheaper to run. If you’ve been buying disposables, switching to a pod kit is the single biggest thing you can do to cut your vaping costs. This guide covers how pod kits work, prefilled vs refillable, what the switch actually saves you over 3, 6 and 12 months, which kits to buy, and the mistakes that catch most people out. Browse them under Pod Systems & Kits.
How a pod system works
A pod kit has two parts: a rechargeable battery and a pod that holds the e-liquid and the coil. You charge the battery over USB-C and reuse it for months or years. The only thing you replace is the inexpensive pod, when the coil eventually wears out.
Fill the pod with your choice of nicotine salt and you control both the flavour and the strength — including stepping down to 20mg or 0mg later, which a disposable can never let you do. Pod kits run at low power and give a tight, cigarette-like mouth-to-lung (MTL) draw, which is exactly what an ex-smoker wants.
That’s the whole device. There’s no wattage to fiddle with, no coil-building, no tank to unscrew. If you can charge a phone and pour liquid into a small opening, you can run a pod system.
Prefilled vs refillable pods
- Refillable: you fill an empty pod from a bottle. Cheapest per ml, widest flavour choice, and full control of your nicotine strength. Best long-term value by a distance.
- Prefilled: pods arrive pre-loaded and click straight on. Less effort, slightly higher cost per ml, no bottles to carry. An excellent stepping stone if you’re coming directly off disposables and don’t want to change everything at once.
There’s no wrong answer here. Plenty of people run a prefilled system for a month or two, get comfortable, and then move to refillable once the routine feels normal.

The real cost maths over 3, 6 and 12 months
Everyone says pod kits are cheaper. Here’s the actual arithmetic. To compare fairly you have to price by e-liquid volume, not by advertised puff counts — puff numbers are estimates and they’re not consistent between brands.
Assume a typical moderate MTL vaper getting through roughly 2ml of e-liquid a day (about 60ml a month).
Disposables. A 25,000-puff device costs around R369 and holds roughly 20ml. At 2ml a day that’s about ten days per device — so roughly three devices a month, or about R1,100 a month.
Refillable pod kit. A 30ml bottle of nic salt is around R299, so 60ml is about R600. Add pods: a 4-pack runs about R240 and one pod lasts a week or two, so budget roughly R120 a month. That’s about R720 a month ongoing, on top of a one-off kit at around R425.
| Time | Disposables | Refillable pod kit | You save |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 months | ~R3,300 | ~R2,585 | ~R715 |
| 6 months | ~R6,600 | ~R4,745 | ~R1,855 |
| 12 months | ~R13,200 | ~R9,065 | ~R4,135 |
The kit itself pays for itself inside the first month or so. After that, every month is money back in your pocket — and over a year you’re looking at roughly R4,000 saved. Heavy vapers save considerably more; light vapers save less. And if you buy cheaper 30ml salts than the R299 premium bottles used above, the gap widens further still.
The bit nobody mentions
The saving isn’t only financial. Twelve months of disposables is roughly 36 lithium batteries in the bin. Twelve months on a pod kit is one battery, still working. It’s the same reason pod systems are the sensible default rather than merely the cheap option.
What else you need to buy
Not much, and that’s the point:
- E-liquid — bottled nic salts in 20mg, 35mg or 50mg. Buy two flavours so you don’t get palate fatigue on one.
- Spare pods or coils — grab a 4-pack up front from Coils, Pods & Spares. Running out mid-week is the most common reason people slide back to disposables.
- A USB-C cable — you almost certainly already own one.
Common mistakes when switching
Most people who “try a pod kit and go back to disposables” hit one of these. All of them are avoidable.
- Not priming a new pod. Fill it, then let it stand for five to ten minutes before the first puff. Vaping a dry wick burns the coil instantly and the pod is ruined — this is the number one killer of new pods.
- Chain-vaping a fresh coil. Ease into it for the first day. Rapid back-to-back puffs on a new coil outrun the wicking and scorch it.
- Using the wrong e-liquid. MTL pods want nic salts or high-PG MTL liquid. Thick, high-VG sub-ohm juice will not wick through a small coil and will burn.
- Picking the wrong strength. Don’t drop from a 50mg disposable straight to 20mg salt — you’ll crave, vape twice as much, and conclude the kit “doesn’t work”. Match your current strength first, then taper.
- Not buying spare pods. A coil lasts a week or two. If you have no spare when it goes, you’ll buy a disposable — and that’s how the habit comes back.
- Expecting an identical hit on day one. A pod kit feels slightly different from a disposable. Give it three days before you judge it.
How to choose your first pod system
If you want the lowest possible barrier and no bottles, start with a prefilled system like the Bewolk Bar battery — it’s R169 and behaves almost exactly like the disposable you’re used to. If you want the real savings, go refillable: the Vaporesso XROS 6 Mini or the OXVA NeXLIM Go are the two most sensible first buys in the range, and both will still be working a year from now. If you already know you’re staying, spend a bit more on the XROS Pro 2 and get the bigger battery and better flavour from the start.
Whichever you pick, buy spare pods at the same time and start on the same nicotine strength you’re currently vaping. Do those two things and the switch is genuinely easy.

How long does a pod last?
A coil/pod typically lasts one to two weeks of moderate vaping. Sweeter, darker liquids shorten coil life; lighter fruit and menthol profiles extend it. When flavour turns muted or burnt, swap the pod.
Can I put any e-liquid in a pod system?
No — MTL pods are built for nic salts or high-PG MTL liquid. Thick high-VG sub-ohm juice won’t wick through the small coil and will burn it. Stick to the liquids in our nic salts range.
Prefilled or refillable for a first kit?
Prefilled (like the Bewolk Bar battery) is the easiest step off disposables; refillable (XROS, NeXLIM) is the cheapest to run. Many people start prefilled and move to refillable within a month or two.
How often do I need to charge it?
Most compact pod kits last a light-to-moderate vaper a full day and recharge over USB-C in under an hour. Heavier vapers should look at 1000mAh+ kits like the XROS Pro 2.
Beyond starter kits: the full pod systems & kits range
Everything above focuses on the classic MTL starter pod, but the Pod Systems & Kits category is wider than that. It also covers prefilled pod batteries (Bewolk, Airscream AirsPops and similar — the lowest-effort step off disposables), refillable MTL pod kits (XROS, XLIM, NeXLIM, Caliburn), and pod-mods — larger kits that run sub-ohm coils for a direct-lung draw. If you’re shopping the restrictive-to-airy spectrum, our best refillable pod kits round-up ranks the current MTL field, while cloud-chasers should start with the DL hardware guide instead. Whichever kit you land on, pair it with the right liquid: tight-draw pods want the strengths covered in the nic salts & MTL liquids pillar.

You must be 18 or older to purchase. Nicotine-containing products contain nicotine, which is an addictive substance. Not for use by non-smokers, pregnant or breastfeeding women.
